A national broadcaster's news website expects its biggest night of the year on election night, with results pages refreshed by millions of readers. Last year a hostile group took the site down with a flood of network-level traffic and a wave of HTTP requests from botnets. This year the site must stay up under both kinds of attack, block any single address sending more than a set number of requests in five minutes, and have a specialist response team to call during an attack. Results pages change every thirty seconds and can be cached briefly at the edge, while the origin is a small fleet behind a load balancer that must never see the full flood. The broadcaster also wants protection against unexpected scaling bills caused by an attack.
