A company is building a chat app for its field engineers, who work in basements and remote sites with patchy mobile signal. Messages must appear on everyone's phone in a channel as soon as they are sent, and an engineer who has been offline for an hour must receive everything they missed when their signal returns. The mobile team wants a single GraphQL endpoint for fetching history, posting messages and subscribing to new ones, rather than building and scaling its own WebSocket servers. Only signed-in employees may join a channel, and every message must be stored durably and looked up by channel and time, with no database servers to manage.
