An insurer suspects organised fraud rings: groups of claims that look unrelated but share phone numbers, bank accounts, addresses, repair garages or witnesses, sometimes four or five links apart. Investigators want to open a claim and see, within a second or two, every other claim connected to it through any chain of shared details, and to spot new rings as claims arrive. About twenty thousand claims a day come from the claims system, which must not slow down or wait while the analysis happens. The team would rather not write application code that joins tables recursively, and wants a managed database built for exploring relationships.
