A credit-card company must produce a PDF statement for each of its 1.2 million customers on the first day of every month and email each customer a link to it. The run must start by itself shortly after midnight on the first, finish within a few hours, and work through customers in parallel rather than one after another. If rendering a single statement fails, that one should be retried and, if it still fails, set aside for a person to look at, without stopping the others. Operations wants to see how far the run has got at any moment. The PDFs must be kept for seven years, and the team does not want servers sitting idle for the other twenty-nine days.
