A studio is launching an online shooter whose matches run on dedicated game servers that hold each match's state in memory. Players connect over UDP, and the game client ships with a fixed list of IP addresses that cannot change after release, because updating the client in every app store takes weeks. Players in Asia, Europe and the Americas should reach the nearest healthy Region over the fastest network path rather than the public internet, and if a Region fails its players must be moved to another one within seconds, without waiting for DNS caches to expire. The number of game servers in each Region must grow and shrink with the evening peak.
