An insurer's quoting system is a set of Java applications that exchange messages through Apache ActiveMQ using JMS, with durable queues, topics and transactions built into the code. The insurer is moving these applications to AWS as they are, onto virtual machines, because rewriting them is years away. It wants to stop running the message broker itself, keep the JMS and OpenWire protocols the code already uses, and have the broker survive the loss of an Availability Zone automatically. Quotes and policies are kept in a relational database, which should also fail over across zones without anyone restoring a backup.
