A video-streaming service keeps each member's profile, watch history and playback position, and must stay fully available to members in North America and Europe even if an entire AWS Region goes down. Both Regions must serve reads and writes at the same time rather than sitting as primary and standby, and a member who pauses a show on a phone in one Region should be able to resume it on a television served from the other within a second or two. The last write winning is acceptable for this data. Members should be sent to the Region with the lowest latency for them and moved away from an unhealthy Region automatically, and the team does not want to run database replication itself.
